PERMANENT WAY, COMPONENTS AND IDEAL REQUIRMENTS OF PERMANENT WAY
PERMANENT WAY :
The combination of rails fitted on sleepers and resting on ballast and sub-grade is called a permanent way.
The permanent way should be properly designed so the load of the train is uniformly distributed over the two rails. The track should have enough lateral strength. The radii and superelevation provided on curves should be properly designed.
COMPONENTS :
(i) Sub-grade or formation
(ii) Ballast
(iii) Sleepers
(iv) Rails
(v) Fixture and Fastening
IDEAL REQUIRMENTS FOR PERMANENT WAY :
1. The gauge should be correct and uniform.
2. The rail should be at a proper level. ...
3. The alignment should be correct.
4. The gradient should be uniform. ...
5. The tractive resistance of the track should be minimum.
6. The track should possess sufficient elasticity.
